ART STREET HUNTER

I have not been to Penang for over 18 years. Lately I have heard that Penang is famous with Street Art which is part of the city's heritage enclave. It seem that Street Art is more famous than Penang Hill.
The art works consist of Mural Painting and a collection of caricatures Steel Rod Sculpture. The Steel Rod art tell the history of the street's name and the origin. It is awesome to get to know the history of Georgetown by hunting around all the art which is scramble around the city and can be accessed either by walking, cycling or by trishaw like we did it.
Anyway, we managed to hunt a few as it is getting dark. We shall continue on our next trip.

Samsung S5 Goes Underwater

As it has been reported earlier, Samsung has presented another flagship model of its ‘S’ line, which has obtained, as you might guess, the sequence number 5. The smartphone has traditionally absorbed all the new technologies available since the premiere of his predecessor S4.
The phones are almost identical conceptually, and an inexperienced user perhaps won’t distinguish S4 from S5.
S5 has a bit wider screen, 5.1 inches versus 5 in S4. Yet, apart from the size, the display remains the same: it’s the same Super AMOLED with 1920x1080 pixels.
The main difference between the phones is the back of the smartphone. S5’s back cover is made not only from rubber, but punched, as in the Nexus 7.
In addition, the standard Micro-USB connector is now covered with a rubber stopper; S5 (even the basic version) has a dust and splash protection, according to IP67 standard. This means that it can function under water (up to 50cm depth).
Same basically new characteristics are inside the device. The smartphone will be equipped with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 with a frequency of 2.5 GHz, and 2 GB of RAM. There is an LTE support. The built-in memory is 16 or 32 gigabytes.
One of the main additions in the new S5 is definitely a ‘Home’ button, with a mounted fingerprint scanner. However, unlike iPhone 5S, the button in S5 is narrower. Nevertheless, the sensor works fine. Samsung has also announced about its partnership with PayPal, and the payment service will now accept a fingerprint as a user ID when making purchases.
While talking about biometrics, it should be mentioned that S5 is now armed with a brand new heart rate monitor. In order to measure the pulse, it is necessary to clamp one’s finger to the infrared sensor. A sensor will automatically provide cardiac statistics for the user.
The smartphone’s camera has undergone significant changes; now its is a 16- megapixel sensor with a new control software, which allows, for example, display light settings not before taking a picture, but after. Also there is a super-fast focus and an opportunity to change it even on the finished picture (similar options are available on Nokia’s flagship devices too).

S5’s battery has also ben renewed; now its capacity is 2800 milliamp-hours, plus the new super-efficient power saving mode. When it is enabled, and the remainder of the charge is at least 10 percent, the smartphone’s screen becomes black and white, light disappears, and all the internet connections are automatically shut down. According to Samsung, the phone is able to stay “alive” another day without recharging (of course without making/receiving calls).

Tango by Google

Search engine giant Google has recently announced about the brand new innovative project, Tango – a smartphone with 3D sensors. The device creates three-dimensional model of the environment, using a compass, gyroscopes and the so-called “computer vision”. The latter is 3D sensor, largely similar to those used in Kinect, the peripheral device by Microsoft. Yet, while Kinect is nothing more than a gaming controller for non-contact gestures project Tango, as per Google, has to develop the idea of augmented reality. The company is interested in the application of this technology in the areas related to three-dimensional maps, indoors navigation, and video games that not enable not virtual, but physical space.
Google provides an example of the use of this technology by an opportunity to calculate the dimensions of the room with a phone’s camera. For example, it may be really useful before buying furniture. It is the mobility of the device that provides developers the freedom to experiment and use the 3D scanning in completely new forms.
For a long time, three-dimensional space scanners were only stationary devices, primarily due to the large power consumption. Kinect, for instance, uses only little more than one Watt. To solve this problem, Google has built into the project Tango an additional processor Myriad 1, developed by Irish startup - Movidius.
The chip is used for processing visual and geo-location data, has a capacity of one teraflop, and consumes only a few hundred milliwatt. Such capacity is enough to calculate not only the size and shape of the room, but алсо every single object in it.
It is also noteworthy that the development unit engaged in project Tango is Advanced Technology and Projects – a part of the former Motorola, and headed by Johnny Lee, who used to work on the creation of the aforementioned Kinect.
Many experts predict great opportunities for this technology in the future. It is known that Movidius is also going to sell its processors to other companies, so it is quite possible that in the near future, mobile 3D scanners will be built into most smartphones. For example, Intel has its own technology, known as Intel Realsense 3D.

Another major of the industry, Apple also has some studios aimed at capturing and processing 3D space, called PrimeSense. It’s interesting to know that PrimeSense was also involved in the creation of Kinect. Thus, M7 processors works in conjunction with the main A7 chip through solutions different from Moviduis, but performing the same tasks.

Microsoft Cortana

In the rapidly growing world of innovations and hi-tech discoveries, corporations have to dwell in pace with time in order not to lose in the endless rivalry. Microsoft is not an exception; the company has recently announced that it will get its own analogue of Siri. Despite the fact that Microsoft keeps all the information about the upcoming update of Windows 8.1 in the strictest confidence, the information about the future changes and additions to the operating system has leaked to the Web anyway.
One of the main surprises and innovations at the same is going to be the appearance of Cortana - a personal digital assistant. According to the hi-tech portal The Verge, Cortana, which combines the functionality of Google Now and Siri, is about to replace Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. However, unlike the mentioned rival products, Cortana will have its own identity. Some experts even joke that it will look like the famous, annoying clip of the old package of MS Office. Nonetheless, it is not really clear how Cortana will look like, but one can assume that the image of the mobile assistant matches the original - the eponymous heroine of Halo, a flagship video game series by Microsoft. Cortana will simulate emotions and adapt to the user; hence, the system is likely to be self-learning.
Ii seems like the question of personal data integrity was really considered in the Microsoft Corporation. It is known that Cortana will be supplied with some additional feature (a “notebook”) - an application that allows users to manually select which personal information an electronic secretary may use on a Windows Phone.
Cortana collects contextual information obtained from services such as Bing or Foursquare. By the way, it is apparently powered by Satori - the main engine behind Bing. Cortana is able to provide information regarding the weather, stock quotes, help to navigate, recall about a meeting and so on (actually, nothing impressing to the Siri users). Therefore, the functional analogs of digital assistant are not much different.

In July 2013, Bill Gates mentioned the fact that Microsoft could create its own “smart” assistant. He said that the new generation of personal assistants had to conduct an ongoing dialogue with the person, and should be able to do much more than just give advice on specific products. According to Gates, such systems, for example, should help to choose a gift or to arrange a visit.

Tizen to Replace Android on Galaxy Gear 2

Samsung has prepared a couple of huge surprises for all the gadget enthusiasts out there. At this year’s MWC in Barcelona, South Korean consumer electronic giant is going to present not only the next flagship smartphone Galaxy S5, but also the next generation of its “smart” watches, called Galaxy Gear. Yet, the most intriguing part of the news is not in the fact of the mentioned device’s presentation, but the rumor that the watch will not be running Android OS.
According to the information provided by USA Today (obtained from some reliable insider sources), instead of Google’s mobile operating system, Samsung has decided to implement its own operating system, known as OS Tizen.
First official announcement about Tizen development was made in September 2011. It is a Linux kernel-based open source mobile operating system, actively developed and supported by Samsung. Tizen was formed in the process of merging MeeGo (a platform that Nokia has developed with Intel to move to Windows Phone) and LiMo. Later on, Samsung decided to merge Tizen with another OS of its own - bada. The project has already received the support of several major players in the mobile industry.
The upcoming new version of Tizen, which will be supporting HTML5, is going to be one of the key products during Samsung’s presentation evening on 24th of February at MWC.
The first version of the Galaxy Gear, presented in September 2013, is based on Android. Observers and experts have criticized the device for uninviting appearance, inconvenience of usage and quick battery consumption. Perhaps, the brand new OS Tizen will solve at least some of these problems.
According the same sources, Samsung intends to use Tizen in its “smart” watches, since it does want to contribute to Android’s popularity growth. Samsung’s software for mobile devices, especially the TouchWiz interface, is often becomes the target of criticism for its slow performance and unstable working of some of the “amazing” features. Nevertheless, the South Korean company is not about to abandon the ambition to become a competitor to Apple, Google and Microsoft, creating its own ecosystem of services and applications.
Today, the only device with Tizen that has officially been announced is Samsung’s camera NX300M. It is already available in South Korea, and according to Samsung, in comparison with other cameras, which firmware is based on Linux, NX300M loads twice as faster.

TSMC To Produce iPhone 6 Chips

Apple has officially come to the agreement with Taiwanese manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to supply the new generation of chips for iPhone, iPad and other iOS-based devices. It is a well-known fact that Cupertino-based corporation has been in a long-term cooperation with Samsung, but has decided to change the partner because of competition with the South Korean giant, and due to the numerous “patent wars” and corresponding lawsuits.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company was founded in 1987, becoming one of the leading semiconductor manufacturers in the world. Among its clients are such large companies as AMD, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Broadcom and Intel.
TSMC produces “system on a chip” for 20 and 28-nanometer process technology. They are smaller and more energy efficient than a 32-nanometer A5 and A6 chips from Samsung, used in Apple’s contemporary gadgets.
Apple had intentions to sign a deal with TMSC in 2010, but the agreement was postponed because Apple’s representatives remained dissatisfied with performance and power consumption of TSMC processors. Another condition insisted by Apple was the allocation of the complete manufacturing capacities exclusively for iPhone and iPad chips, which TSMC did not want to do.
Today, according to the latest information, TSMC has started the manufacturing process of a new generation of A-chips. Most likely, the processors will be labeled A8, and will be installed in the upcoming iPhone 6, as well as in the updated version of iPad Air. Presumably, both devices will be shown in the autumn of 2014.
According to the insider sources, Samsung has not managed to establish the required mass production of 20-nanometer chips of A-series, while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company was able to meet the demands of Apple. The sources also note that Apple will request TSMC to start manufacturing of the brand new A9 chips (based on 16-nanometer crystal) in 2015. Later, when Samsung is able to start a mass production of 14-nanometer chips in a sufficient (for Apple) amount, Apple will restart its cooperation with the South Korean corporation.

However, according to the KGI Securities analyst, Ming Chi Kuo, new iPad Mini with Retina display is unlikely to undergo dramatic changes this year. He also expressed the opinion that the “professional” model of iPad has been postponed to the next year (i.e. 2015). As for the rumors about the new iPhone 6, the latest information that has appeared in the web was related to some “spy” photos of the future gadget.

Apple to Expand The Scope of Activities

Apple Corporation has recently made another step to strengthen its position in the heath care area (and not only). The company has granted patents for hitless control touch interface and built-in heart rate sensor, which can also be used to identify the user of the mobile device. One of the Apple patents describes how to use this technology, in particular, to improve user identification by gesture recognition and block accidental clicks. At the same time, the technology of more accurate touchscreen responses in the cold weather is described as well. Another patent describes a sensor that allows a user to determine their heart rate through the metal frame of the mobile device, conducting electric current to gather corresponding data. According to the patent details, the application accuracy, with which the sensor is working, will allow the user to identify the gadget according to biometric indicators. The goal of this technology will present an additional safety barrier for the owners of iPhone. In addition, it can be used in fitness applications, and not only by using smartphones, but also in other portable devices, which are yet to appear (e.g. iWatch).
Apple has been showing constant interest to the above-mentioned technologies due to the appearance of new product categories in the nearest future. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the iPhone and iPad maker may very soon start the production of devices associated with medicine and cars. In particular, according to the newspaper, Apple intends to create a device that will be able to predict a heart attack, by “listening to” the sound of arterial blood flow.
San Francisco Chronicle also mentions that the project is allegedly headed by the electroacoustic engineer, Tomlinson Holman. The latter is mostly known as the author of the audio standard THX (Tomlinson Holman’s eXperiment, created in 1982 for George Lucas’ company Lucasfilm). What is more, Holman is the key figure in the development of the first 10.2 surround sound system.
Actually, this is not the first rumor that Apple is interested in medicine. In January, it was reported that the company’s top executives have met with the sanitary inspection representatives of the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), and discussed with them mobile applications in this area.

As per San Francisco Chronicle, Adrian Perica (Apple’s chief specialist on the transactions contracting and buying startups) has met with Tesla Motors CEO, Elon Musk last spring in Cupertino. However, the details of their negotiations have not been disclosed.

Mobile Giants Transformations

As it was recently reported about possible migration of Windows XP users to Google’s Chrome OS, the situation in the world of mobile operation systems looks just the opposite. According to official (insider) sources, Microsoft itself is considering about the possible transfer of Android applications to Windows and Windows Phone.
The reasons for this step are well known: Windows Phone suffers from limited amount of applications, and Microsoft does not always manage to attract the developers’ interest to the platform.
It looks like Microsoft has eventually realized that it is not possible to stop the Android invasion, and the best way to find a relatively beneficial solution of this situation lies in the possible cooperation with Google. By allowing the huge amount applications from Google Play, Microsoft would definitely get rid of the problem with the lack of content, and would possibly transfer new users to its own services. However, the consequences can be sad, a vivid example of which is BlackBerry.
Despite the technical difficulties, the integration and support of Android directly on Windows and Windows Phone is possible; however, this method can simply destroy the Windows Phone as a platform, since not every developer wants to create an application under Windows-based Metro interface, when there’s a possibility of releasing a simple port of the standard Android apps.
It has also become known that Intel is promoting its concept of running two operating systems on a single device, and the company representatives really insist on letting the Android applications to the Windows Store.
However, there are also some examples of poor integration, e.g. Amazon Store for Kindle is currently full of outdated Android applications.
Anyway, such a move by Microsoft is fraught with enormous risks. Yet, the software giant can afford to do experiment, as the fate of the company is not dependent on the mobile division.
At the same time, Nokia, which is under Microsoft’s control, is rumored to release a smartphone based on its own work-version of Android. Yet, these devices will be most likely shipped without Google Play store.
Nevertheless, even if Microsoft decides on the Android-to- Windows application integration, it will not happen before 2015, i.e. after the release of Windows 9.

However, the company is also considering the release of free versions of Windows Phone and Windows RT, which in turn may spur interest among developers in order to start delivering apps for this particular platform.

Windows XP Business Users to Go Chrome OS

It has recently been reported that one of the main strategies of Google will be the further development of its Chrome OS and the corresponding notebooks. As it is reported in the Google’s official blog, the search giant has reached an agreement with the developer of the virtualization solutions, WMware. This cooperation will allow running Windows-based applications within the Chrome OS. Thus, it means that all the owners of “Chromebooks” (laptops that are run on cloud-based operating system) will now have access to a desktop Windows, applications and data, using WMware Horizon.
Google has not chosen this particular period of time accidentally: since Microsoft has officially announced that the corporation will not maintain its Windows XP users any more. It means that millions of customers that are still accustomed to the legendary operating system will not receive any patches and security updates. Hence, it looks like a great opportunity for Google to entice the “orphaned” Windows XP users. Of course, by saying “users”, it is meant the customers of the business segment, i.e. companies across the globe that use Windows XP on a corporate level. According to Microsoft’s official statement, less than in two months, the corporation will actually get rid of its then most popular operating system. Consequently, this means that the Windows XP users, which still have it installed on their machines, will have to think about moving to the alternative operating systems. By the way, as per December 2013, the global share of Windows XP makes 28.98 %.
In turn, being aware of the given situation, Microsoft is doing everything possible to bring its former XP users (especially the corporate segment) to Windows 8. At the same time, Microsoft is currently working on tweaking its “eight’s interface in order to make it closer to the previous versions if this operating system. It has been reported that the mentioned update may be available since March 11, 2014.

Moreover, according to the official Google blog, the users WMware on “Chromebooks” will have access to the familiar environment of Windows XP, which will also be without the known issues with security and application compatibility. Currently, VMware Horizon View 5.3 is available only as a DaaS (Data as a Service) over the Internet. However, according to the company, the platform will be possible for downloading as a Chrome Web Store application.

VSCO Cam: From Photo App To Social Network

Among the enormous variety of mobile applications specialized in enhancing and editing photos, VSCO Cam is definitely one of the most popular solutions in the market, available for both iPhone and Android. If earlier the program was focused solely on how to tweak the original pictures, making them more beautiful, the latest update of VSCO Cam turns the application into a kind of the social network, similar to Instagram.
The app has acquired the Home section, where one can see the pictures stream from the profiles for which one is subscribed. Yet, one cannot “like” the photos, leave comments or see the number of his/her followers. VSCO 3.0 is undoubtedly a social service, but it obviously does not compete with Instagram, in which people care about the number of their followers, using numerous #-tags to their photos in order to get more “likes”.
“You do not leave comments under the paintings that you like on the walls of the museum”, said the service founder Joel Flory. “VSCO has never been and never will be a platform in which numbers have a significant role”. Flory added that the profiles and news have been added to the application, since it was one of the most frequent requests from the VSCO users.
The application will continue to focus specifically on the photos, and not the social component, which is designed in the style the absolute minimalism. In addition to the pictures of friends, one will see the photos, selected by the application’s editors. The VSCO editor’s picks often include fascinating pictures, while “Popular” section in Instagram mainly consists of some celebrities’ “selfies”.
It’s a noteworthy fact that at the very beginning of its career, Instagram was also aimed at uploading and editing images only, but then the project went the way of the maximal “socialization”.
Unfortunately, VSCO users cannot add friends from Facebook and Twitter, so one has to search for acquaintances manually. “Right now, the broad masses of the people are just beginning to realize that a camera phone can be used not only for self and photos of your latte, but it can also help to create a powerful and beautiful image,” - added Flory.

In addition to the “socialization” elements, the update presents the following new features: adjustable picture tilt, auto-save capability to Camera Roll, a redesigned tool for trimming, and other tiny innovations.

Rumor: Apple TV to Be Announced in April

It is a well-known fact that every year, all the true followers of the Apple products have been speculating on the possible release dates of the new Apple TV. According to some rumors that have leaked out lately, Apple is already close to introduce the Apple TV set-top box of the new generation.
As it was reported earlier this year, Apple is already testing the new generation of Apple TV, which interface will be redesigned in the style of iOS 7. What is more, the set-top boxes will have their own application store. Third-party developers will be able to fill its content, which will include games as well. Also, it is possible that Apple TV will support wireless game controllers. Another noteworthy fact is that Company has “promoted” the set-top box Apple TV: now it’s not an accessory, but a full-fledged product category alongside with the iPhone or iPad. Experts believe that this was done on purpose.
One of the possible modifications, which are discussed in Cupertino, combines the capabilities of Apple TV and Wi-Fi router AirPort Express with the 802.11ac protocol support. This is in particular to increase the quality and stability of the video stream transmitted to the console.
However, the final release date may be delayed because Apple is still in the process of negotiating with the major video suppliers, such as Time Warner Cable. According to Bloomberg, the new generation of Apple TV will get a more powerful processor and a simplified interface that will allow its viewers to easily switch between TV shows, movies and other online content.
If Apple manages to conclude a licensing deal with Time Warner, US-based users will have access to hundreds of television channels. To date, their number is limited to six: Disney, ABC, ESPN, HBO, PBS and Bloomberg TV.

Many households already get Internet, cable TV and telephony services through a single cable; hence, theoretically, Apple may try to combine all of these features using the so-called “all-in-one” concept. Moreover, according to the some reliable sources, one of the versions of the new Apple TV has a built-in TV tuner to display channels received, for example, the cable box (Google TV, for instance, already has similar opportunities on its consoles). The new generation Apple TV will be allegedly a game console as well.

Kaspersky vs. Mask

Kaspersky Lab reported the discovery of the most modern and sophisticated cyber threats ever declassified. The company revealed the details of the strife against spyware called “Mask” (or Careto in Spanish). According to the Kaspersky experts, this tool is created by Hispanic cybercriminals (or at least people who are trying to be like the Spaniards).
So why is it called “Mask” or Careto? As it turned out, the Argentines do not really know this word. “Spaniards say it is popular word is slang denoting a mask. Or an ugly face”, says Vitali Kamlyuk - a leading anti-virus expert in Kaspersky Lab. “Argentines say that it was some unfamiliar word to them. Therefore, it is not quite clear which country sands behind this virus”.
Moreover, the Kaspersky specialists assume that “Mask” is not a creation of some enthusiastic hackers, but a seriously developed malware, which may be delivered for any country’s secret service.
“We think that this level of professionalism goes far beyond conventional cybercrime”, says Kostin Raju, head of Global Research Center at Kaspersky Lab. “To achieve this, you need to have huge resources and work for a large company or the government. We believe that creators of the virus worked for the state; and not just because that they have created such a complex system, but also because it is not aimed at making profit. This is what every cybercriminal wants - to earn a lot of money. In this case however, the money did not matter”, Raju resumed.
Presumably, “Mask” started to act in 2007. Moreover, many of its modules were already known; they participated in many of the so-called “targeted attacks”. These are the cases when a Trojan does not walk freely in the network and steals data from anybody, but is sent to a specific victim, often in the form of letters from an infected link. In case of  “Mask”, the links looked quite trustworthy, for example, YouTube links.
In addition, “Mask” worked on all existing operating systems, including Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and even supposedly on mobile systems. Data exchange between the program modules was carried out through ‘cookie’ files. Virus had infected at least 380 computers in 31 countries. What is more, for some reason, Morocco is in the first place by the number of infections. Brazil is on the second place, and the United Kingdom holds the third position. According to Kaspersky Lab experts, all the infected victims had access to classified information.

Chinese Laid Their Eyes on Viber?

The recent several years in the contemporary IT industry are very replete in terms of numerous multi-billion merger deals and IPOs. According to some insider sources, it has become known that a brand new significant deal may take place soon. This time, it is about one of the most prominent and widely used messaging applications, called Viber.  The service was initially launched in 2010, as a direct rival for the omnipresent Skype, and was available for iPhone users only. The main figure behind this application is an Israeli entrepreneur, Talmon Marco; furthermore, Viber is also owned by one of the largest file-sharing services/companies in Israel, called iMesh. Viber is officially registered on Cyprus, but the company has a Research & Development department in Israel. As for today, Viber has more than 200 million users worldwide (May 7, 2013 statistics), and is available on most of the major platforms, including Windows, OS X, Android, iOS and even on some of the desolate (less popular) ones, e.g. Symbian (Series 40), BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile.
The rumors, which spread throughout the Web with enormous speed, inform that Viber may be sold to some Chinese (or another Asia-based) company for approximately $200-300 million. It is know that about six months ago, Viber turned to the investment company, Goldman Sachs, in order to assist them for finding a potential buyer.
Even though Viber implements an advanced VoIP technology that significantly improves the quality of sound, and is still very popular amongst a great variety of similar free messaging services, it has however not been funded by any venture capital organizations this far. In addition, the company is constantly moving forward in order to be in pace with time. Hence, it has recently released a feature called Viber Out, which allows making calls even to non-Viber users all around the globe (it’s not a secret that Skype has been using such technology for years).
Nonetheless, according to other official source in the name of Reuters, Viber’s CEO and founder, Talmon Marco has officially announced that he had no idea about the speculations regarding his creation’s selling to the Asian partners.
It should also be mentioned that Asian market already has in possession pretty popular free messaging solutions, including WeChat (China), Line (Japan) and South Korean messenger, KakaoTalk.

Snapchat’s Vulnerability To Threat iPhone

Nowadays, when there is a huge variety of all types of messengers and related services, there is one specific application that still stands out from the rest. It is called Snapchat, which has initially become available in 2011 and immediately grew into extremely popular application among adolescents and teenagers. Just in case you don’t know what Snapchat is all about and what’s its key difference form all other similar products on the market, here are some details. The main zest of this tiny messenger is that it not only allows its users sending each other text, photo and video content, but also gives permission to a sender to ‘auto-destroy’ the sent item both from a recipient’s device and the application servers.
However, an independent developer named Jamie Sanchez has recently discovered a significant flaw in the famous messenger, which can be considered as a potential threat to all the iOS users. Sanchez claims that due to a breach in the application’s security framework, malefactors can easily organize DDoS-attacks, which will result either in iPhone’s malfunction (up to shutting down) or will allow carrying out a massive spam mail-out from the hacked device.
Technically, the vulnerability itself lies in the so-called authorization tokens (authToken), which are used for account’s authorization. According to Sanchez, these tokens have no validity restrictions, and each time when a user performs an action, Snapchat creates new ones. And since the tokens do not expire, the can be used and re-used from any other device simultaneously.
It is reported that in order to prove the truth of his words, Sanchez has demonstrated the flaw to the LA Times journalist, by sending him about thousand messages within only 5 seconds. It is needless to say that reporter’s iPhone could not manage such a load, and performed reboot. Sanchez has also confessed that Snapchat blocked his test accounts, through which he had discovered the vulnerability. The developer claims that the Snapchat administration does not respect efforts by independent security researchers. Sanchez also reminded about the previously presented report carried out by the Australia specialists (Gibson Security), saying that one can easily pull out any information from Snapchat’s API, which may include such sensitive data as user names, personal information, and more, regardless of user’s privacy settings. It is known that Gibson Security has officially informed Snapchat about this flaw; yet, the popular messenger’s administration ignored the researchers statement.

PayPal Introduces Its Remote Cashbox Technology

PayPal has started to geographically expand its brand new payment terminal, called Beacon. In fact, the technology with such a mysterious name is a Bluetooth antenna, which is a connection between the given store network and the end user, who has been using the device. It is an offline-mode system, actually considered as a long-range NFC module. Thus, it is very similar to a remote cashbox. A buyer can register the purchase on his own, and there is no need to proceed with payment immediately. PayPal only provides an invoice for this particular purchase, and the buyer will be able to pay as soon as he is connected to his account online.
However, the main idea of this concept is to allow users with Beacon bypass the queues in supermarkets, and simply leave the shop after picking the wanted goods. What is more, Beacon will provide the user with all the necessary information about any product, e.g. its availability in the given store, availability of a needed size (if it is a piece of clothing), or how many items are left in stock.
Currently, this technology is quite successfully implemented around in the United States, and in the first half of this year, Beacon will be introduced in Australia, Britain, Canada, France and Germany.
Nonetheless, there a lot of open questions: for instance, PayPal does not comment on how it would be possible to know if a user has paid for the particular item he has picked in a store, or guarantee that the user would not grasp anything else with him. It is known that Beacon recommends sending a photo of the shopper together with the goods he has “bought” to the store administration. Also, despite the additional costs, it would be possible to install a special Bluetooth marker on each item, so in case if paid, the item will not beep while leaving the shop. Yet, it is still unclear what to do with those unfair buyers, who can simply register the purchase in the system, but never pay for it. Since PayPal is responsible for the security of purchase on all sides, it still in question if it can manage such a tremendous load.
Therefore, Beacon seems to have more downsides than advantages, especially when it comes to shopping in huge malls with a corresponding buyers stream.

Motorola Goes China

Two and a half years after the well known $12,5 billion Google and Motorola Mobility deal, the alliance between the two has eventually cracked. Currently, numerous IT experts call it the biggest mistake ever omitted by the Internet giant.
By the end of January 2014, it became known that Google has sold the Motorola to the Chinese Lenovo for “only” $2.9 billions. Everything has happened very unexpectedly and was a shock for many, since they thought that Google and Motorola union would remain untouched for years. At least, the Google top managers have highlighted it numerous times back then, stating that the deal would lead to Google’s domination on the world’s smartphone market, as they had access to thousands of technologies patented by Motorola. All these statements were also supported by the intensively promoted Moto X smartphone, and the factory built in Texas.
Now, the entire IT industry can do nothing but wondering what could went wrong within this deal, and what has actually led Google to sell Motorola about four times cheaper than it was purchased. It is interesting that after the official announcement of the deal, the Google shares went up immediately, while the company reps still remain silent about the new deal with Lenovo.
Anyway, it should be noted that the recent deal is no so unprofitable as it may seem. First of all, Google has got rid of the useless Motorola Mobility subdivision, specialized in top-box manufacturing (the latter was acquired by Arris for about $2.5 billion). Moreover, two and a half years ago, Google has obtained about $3 billions of Motorola, which went to the Internet giant as a bonus. In a rough calculation, it is obvious that in the current scenario, Google has only lost about $3 billion. What is more, even Lenovo has purchased the entire Motorola division, almost all of the company’s patents remain under Goggle’s authority, and Lenovo will be allowed to used only a limited amount of the patents, strictly per license agreement. Another interesting fact is that only the patent package by Motorola is estimated at five and a half billion dollars.
Therefore, it is obvious that Google has achieved its main goal; even though both Moto X and Moto G have not become kind of sensational devices, the company has set up the customized manufacturing of the Motorola smartphones using Android OS, which can be considered as another huge leap in invading the mobile OS market.

Sony to Say Goodbye to VAIO

Now this is official; it has recently been announced that the Japanese technological giant in the name of Sony Corporation is going to get rid of its famous VAIO division, mostly responsible for computer (laptop) production. The main reason behind this step is simple: VAIO has become unprofitable, and although Sony does not provide official statistics regarding this segment, the company is shutting down this business only because of the mentioned factor. Divestment of Sony’s PC manufacturing division is one of the major steps that the company is undertaking for the overall framework and strategic transformations.
However, it is know about the new owner of Sony’s PC business. It is the Japanese investment fund, Japan Industrial Partners. Neither of parties have officially announced about the amount of the deal, which should be closed during this March. Yet, according to some independent experts, it will be around $400 – 500M. Just by that time (March 2014), Sony will cease the PC production, and will fire about 5000 of its employees.
Some competent sources (e.g. Recode.net) claim that Japan Industrial Partners will only sell VAIO in the internal Japanese market, and VAIO’s return to the worldwide market is still in question. At the same time, Sony has already guaranteed to provide corresponding support to the customers using VAIO devices.
It should be mentioned that Sony VAIO was considered as the premium segment of the PC (laptop) market. It’s not a secret that even the legendary Steve Jobs had a pretty flattering attitude towards VAIO. As per Apple Insider, after Jobs’ return to Apple in the mid-90s, he could feel the threat coming from the quality PC machines, and he managed to stop supporting Mac Clone (an application that allowed running Mac OS on the third party platforms).
Nonetheless, in the year 2001, Steve Jobs, who was an outstanding technological “fortune-teller”, has officially proposed a deal with Sony, which considered running Mac OS on all the VAIO machines. Currently it is hard to judge Sony’s reply, but by that time, the Japanese corporation refused to join Mac OS family, since their laptops used to be very popular without any external factors.
Currently, the Japanese corporation mostly relies on manufacturing of high-end Ultra-HD 4K TVs, which is going to be the core of Sony’s business in the nearest future. Sony has announced that investors should not expect the operating profit in the current fiscal year; they promise to provide financial reports by the late March 2015.
