ART STREET HUNTER

I have not been to Penang for over 18 years. Lately I have heard that Penang is famous with Street Art which is part of the city's heritage enclave. It seem that Street Art is more famous than Penang Hill.
The art works consist of Mural Painting and a collection of caricatures Steel Rod Sculpture. The Steel Rod art tell the history of the street's name and the origin. It is awesome to get to know the history of Georgetown by hunting around all the art which is scramble around the city and can be accessed either by walking, cycling or by trishaw like we did it.
Anyway, we managed to hunt a few as it is getting dark. We shall continue on our next trip.

Samsung S5 Goes Underwater

As it has been reported earlier, Samsung has presented another flagship model of its ‘S’ line, which has obtained, as you might guess, the sequence number 5. The smartphone has traditionally absorbed all the new technologies available since the premiere of his predecessor S4.
The phones are almost identical conceptually, and an inexperienced user perhaps won’t distinguish S4 from S5.
S5 has a bit wider screen, 5.1 inches versus 5 in S4. Yet, apart from the size, the display remains the same: it’s the same Super AMOLED with 1920x1080 pixels.
The main difference between the phones is the back of the smartphone. S5’s back cover is made not only from rubber, but punched, as in the Nexus 7.
In addition, the standard Micro-USB connector is now covered with a rubber stopper; S5 (even the basic version) has a dust and splash protection, according to IP67 standard. This means that it can function under water (up to 50cm depth).
Same basically new characteristics are inside the device. The smartphone will be equipped with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 with a frequency of 2.5 GHz, and 2 GB of RAM. There is an LTE support. The built-in memory is 16 or 32 gigabytes.
One of the main additions in the new S5 is definitely a ‘Home’ button, with a mounted fingerprint scanner. However, unlike iPhone 5S, the button in S5 is narrower. Nevertheless, the sensor works fine. Samsung has also announced about its partnership with PayPal, and the payment service will now accept a fingerprint as a user ID when making purchases.
While talking about biometrics, it should be mentioned that S5 is now armed with a brand new heart rate monitor. In order to measure the pulse, it is necessary to clamp one’s finger to the infrared sensor. A sensor will automatically provide cardiac statistics for the user.
The smartphone’s camera has undergone significant changes; now its is a 16- megapixel sensor with a new control software, which allows, for example, display light settings not before taking a picture, but after. Also there is a super-fast focus and an opportunity to change it even on the finished picture (similar options are available on Nokia’s flagship devices too).

S5’s battery has also ben renewed; now its capacity is 2800 milliamp-hours, plus the new super-efficient power saving mode. When it is enabled, and the remainder of the charge is at least 10 percent, the smartphone’s screen becomes black and white, light disappears, and all the internet connections are automatically shut down. According to Samsung, the phone is able to stay “alive” another day without recharging (of course without making/receiving calls).

Tango by Google

Search engine giant Google has recently announced about the brand new innovative project, Tango – a smartphone with 3D sensors. The device creates three-dimensional model of the environment, using a compass, gyroscopes and the so-called “computer vision”. The latter is 3D sensor, largely similar to those used in Kinect, the peripheral device by Microsoft. Yet, while Kinect is nothing more than a gaming controller for non-contact gestures project Tango, as per Google, has to develop the idea of augmented reality. The company is interested in the application of this technology in the areas related to three-dimensional maps, indoors navigation, and video games that not enable not virtual, but physical space.
Google provides an example of the use of this technology by an opportunity to calculate the dimensions of the room with a phone’s camera. For example, it may be really useful before buying furniture. It is the mobility of the device that provides developers the freedom to experiment and use the 3D scanning in completely new forms.
For a long time, three-dimensional space scanners were only stationary devices, primarily due to the large power consumption. Kinect, for instance, uses only little more than one Watt. To solve this problem, Google has built into the project Tango an additional processor Myriad 1, developed by Irish startup - Movidius.
The chip is used for processing visual and geo-location data, has a capacity of one teraflop, and consumes only a few hundred milliwatt. Such capacity is enough to calculate not only the size and shape of the room, but алсо every single object in it.
It is also noteworthy that the development unit engaged in project Tango is Advanced Technology and Projects – a part of the former Motorola, and headed by Johnny Lee, who used to work on the creation of the aforementioned Kinect.
Many experts predict great opportunities for this technology in the future. It is known that Movidius is also going to sell its processors to other companies, so it is quite possible that in the near future, mobile 3D scanners will be built into most smartphones. For example, Intel has its own technology, known as Intel Realsense 3D.

Another major of the industry, Apple also has some studios aimed at capturing and processing 3D space, called PrimeSense. It’s interesting to know that PrimeSense was also involved in the creation of Kinect. Thus, M7 processors works in conjunction with the main A7 chip through solutions different from Moviduis, but performing the same tasks.

Microsoft Cortana

In the rapidly growing world of innovations and hi-tech discoveries, corporations have to dwell in pace with time in order not to lose in the endless rivalry. Microsoft is not an exception; the company has recently announced that it will get its own analogue of Siri. Despite the fact that Microsoft keeps all the information about the upcoming update of Windows 8.1 in the strictest confidence, the information about the future changes and additions to the operating system has leaked to the Web anyway.
One of the main surprises and innovations at the same is going to be the appearance of Cortana - a personal digital assistant. According to the hi-tech portal The Verge, Cortana, which combines the functionality of Google Now and Siri, is about to replace Microsoft’s search engine, Bing. However, unlike the mentioned rival products, Cortana will have its own identity. Some experts even joke that it will look like the famous, annoying clip of the old package of MS Office. Nonetheless, it is not really clear how Cortana will look like, but one can assume that the image of the mobile assistant matches the original - the eponymous heroine of Halo, a flagship video game series by Microsoft. Cortana will simulate emotions and adapt to the user; hence, the system is likely to be self-learning.
Ii seems like the question of personal data integrity was really considered in the Microsoft Corporation. It is known that Cortana will be supplied with some additional feature (a “notebook”) - an application that allows users to manually select which personal information an electronic secretary may use on a Windows Phone.
Cortana collects contextual information obtained from services such as Bing or Foursquare. By the way, it is apparently powered by Satori - the main engine behind Bing. Cortana is able to provide information regarding the weather, stock quotes, help to navigate, recall about a meeting and so on (actually, nothing impressing to the Siri users). Therefore, the functional analogs of digital assistant are not much different.

In July 2013, Bill Gates mentioned the fact that Microsoft could create its own “smart” assistant. He said that the new generation of personal assistants had to conduct an ongoing dialogue with the person, and should be able to do much more than just give advice on specific products. According to Gates, such systems, for example, should help to choose a gift or to arrange a visit.

Tizen to Replace Android on Galaxy Gear 2

Samsung has prepared a couple of huge surprises for all the gadget enthusiasts out there. At this year’s MWC in Barcelona, South Korean consumer electronic giant is going to present not only the next flagship smartphone Galaxy S5, but also the next generation of its “smart” watches, called Galaxy Gear. Yet, the most intriguing part of the news is not in the fact of the mentioned device’s presentation, but the rumor that the watch will not be running Android OS.
According to the information provided by USA Today (obtained from some reliable insider sources), instead of Google’s mobile operating system, Samsung has decided to implement its own operating system, known as OS Tizen.
First official announcement about Tizen development was made in September 2011. It is a Linux kernel-based open source mobile operating system, actively developed and supported by Samsung. Tizen was formed in the process of merging MeeGo (a platform that Nokia has developed with Intel to move to Windows Phone) and LiMo. Later on, Samsung decided to merge Tizen with another OS of its own - bada. The project has already received the support of several major players in the mobile industry.
The upcoming new version of Tizen, which will be supporting HTML5, is going to be one of the key products during Samsung’s presentation evening on 24th of February at MWC.
The first version of the Galaxy Gear, presented in September 2013, is based on Android. Observers and experts have criticized the device for uninviting appearance, inconvenience of usage and quick battery consumption. Perhaps, the brand new OS Tizen will solve at least some of these problems.
According the same sources, Samsung intends to use Tizen in its “smart” watches, since it does want to contribute to Android’s popularity growth. Samsung’s software for mobile devices, especially the TouchWiz interface, is often becomes the target of criticism for its slow performance and unstable working of some of the “amazing” features. Nevertheless, the South Korean company is not about to abandon the ambition to become a competitor to Apple, Google and Microsoft, creating its own ecosystem of services and applications.
Today, the only device with Tizen that has officially been announced is Samsung’s camera NX300M. It is already available in South Korea, and according to Samsung, in comparison with other cameras, which firmware is based on Linux, NX300M loads twice as faster.
